Coffee at the cinema? The most beautiful films of all time

29 April 2018

Coffee is culture and this is demonstrated by the fact that cinematography is full of references to the magnificent drink whose origins are mixed between myths and legends.   The classic par excellence is "La banda degli onesti", a 1956 film directed by Camillo Mastrocinque with the mythical couple Totò and Peppino De Filippo. The cult scene is the one in which Totò, playing the part of a porter in a Roman building about to be replaced by an accountant, meets Peppino, a typographer, in a bar, and while they are having a coffee, he tries to explain to him the capitalist system that is leading to his "ruin", through the metaphor of coffee without sugar.   In "Vieni avanti cretino" of 1982, an Italian comedy with Lino Banfi, coffee is ordered in the most disparate and fun ways.   Now let's go over the ocean with "Breakfast at Tiffany's" and the scene in which Audrey Hepburn stops in front of the Tiffany's window with a coffee in her hand. Although she is so elegant and it is early morning in New York and everyone is still asleep, she is not giving up her coffee.   And "Pulp Fiction"? Shall we talk about it? Sensational scene in which Vincent and Jules, stained with blood, argue in Jimmie's kitchen about what to do with a dead body in the garage, while sipping a great coffee. Tarantino, never gets it wrong!   We conclude this short series of films in which the scenes on coffee have become legend, with a film, which already has its essence in the title, we are talking about "Coffee & Cigarettes" of 2003, an independent film, written and directed by Jim Jarmusch, composed of 11 short films, shot in different periods. In short, a real tribute to the ritual of coffee and a cigarette, especially in the short Strano Conoscersi, in which two men, an Italian (Roberto Benigni) and an American (Tom Waits) who apparently do not know each other, sit together in a bar, drinking huge quantities of coffee, talking about nothing in a surreal dialogue, exchanging seats, impressions and opinions on coffee and cigarettes, and finally even their respective dates.
